Pet Battlers – A hand, please? :)

For a while now, I have been attempting to get into Pet Battles, Family Familiar, as well as taking on the pets of Argus. I am somewhat new to this whole scene, and only just begun in this expansion to have a go at it. It has been a lot of fun so far though! And it’s fun coming up with tactics all by myself.

But it’s tough out there making it on my own, not visiting Wowhead or various other guides (staying spoiler free, BfA, all that)

So I decided to at least get an idea, about which pets I need. And my Pet Collection sure needs some love – I just discovered Xu-fu’s website has this super handy function of telling me, which pets I am lacking to be able to be succesful. It’s called Legion Ready-Checker.

Down below is the chart of that. Gosh.

My question to you is now, how would you go about it?

How do you level your pets these days? (Do you even have pets to level? I imagine, that, if you took up Pet Battles back when it was introduced in MoP, you’re pretty much on top of things?)

How about the quality? Do you spend a lot of time capturing the right quality, or have you found an effective way of farming Pet Charms and just use the Stones?

Breeds. I’m lost on this one. Does it really matter that much?

Any input is highly appreciated.

Happy Tuesday to all of you, and thank you so much in advance. πŸ™‚

  1. There are a few very good ways to level pets. First would be to level teams capable of taking on all the Legion pet battle World Quests. Use 2 Gilnean Raven’s (1,2,1) or Crows (1,2,2), or a combination of them, and a leveling pet in the lead. Wild crows can be caught now in Darkmoon Faire. Level by battleing the wild pet packs at the back of Mistvale village in Pandaria. There is a Hozen nearby to revive you pets for 10 silver when they get low. If you are fortunate enough to have a Bronze Whelpling (2,1,1) and a Widget the Departed (1.2.2) you can level pets really fast once every 15 days by battling Squirt in your Warlords of Draenor garrison pet menagerie. The next Squirt day is 8, April.

Once you are able to beat the World Quest pet battles target the ones that give pet charms. If you have alts that can do them as well you can get quite a lot of them in a very short period of time. Prioritize using your charms on Ultimate Battle-Trainging Stones to level specific pets fast to boost your teams and MarkedFlawless Battle-Stones when needed.

This is how I got my collection to this point https://www.warcraftpets.com/account/profiles/Wildeheart/ . I did start collecting back in Mists of Pandaria but never really put a lot of effort into it. When I finally decided to push my collection I had 150-ish max level pets and a total mess of a collection. I decided last October to sort that and the link to my collection is where I am now. Mind I do have the Alt army (14 level 110’s with full World Quest access) to leverage for charm collecting.

Breed and pet quality are very important if you are battleing your pets as there are often abilities and strategies that benefit from specific breeds. Two addons I find a must have are Battle Pet BreedID and Rematch. As to specific breeds for specific pets, google searching “best breed for xxxxxxx” worked best for me and when there was no info I would just make my best choice from knowledge learned from other pet breed combinations in the same family or with similar move sets. When collecting the pets I persoanlly did not bother with rarity as the time investment searching for the right breed was already more than enough. Once i would find the right breed of pet I was after if I did not get lucky with the breed I would simply use a stone to adjust it’s rarity.

If you need any help with specific strategies just let me know. I can either let you know myself or point you to the places and people that either made any specific pet battle startegies or influenced me in the process I used.

Welcome to pet battling and collecting. It can be very fun and rewarding!

    1. To add to Wildeheart, when you’ve got some max level pets, Ashlei in Shadowmoon Valley is a stellar choice to help boost up a fresh pet’s level. She only has 2 pets that do damage. When she sends out here stuffed animal, you can send in your weakling and take a few attacks. Ultimately, it’s about 1-11 on the first fight!

You can do it daily too!!!

    2. My goodness. Wildeheart, thank you so much for taking the time to leave me that many helpful tips.

I have both the Ravens you mention, so that’s a start. I didn’t even know of the spit in Mistvale Village. Neat with the Hozen healer nearby!

Hm, Bronze Whelpling, I’m not sure. I’ll check tomorrow. Widget I have πŸ™‚

      8. of April is now reserved for nothing but pet levelling. Curious to see how many I’ll manage.

Right, I have one alt, that’s all, but she’s a Mage, and has that β€œComplete a WQ a day” thing, so I’ll use that on Charm-quests once they pop.

Oh you have a profile on that Warcraftpets site. I have been thinking about registering there. 843 pets are so impressive, wow. Not many duplicates. On purpose? I am trying to get a less messy collection of pets, and have been tempted to just have one of each. Not sure if it would be wise or not, some are strong together.

Right, I do have Rematch, but never quite cracked the Breed codes. I’ll grab the other AddOn, thank you πŸ™‚ Some tactics I have failed at, despite doing exactly as told, but that must be a Breed issue then for sure.

Thank you so much again! Oh, I wish you had a whole site, like, say…A blog? πŸ˜‰ Where you’d write lots of this stuff…;) πŸ˜€

Thank you πŸ™‚ I’ll jump into it now, and might reach out to you again, more than once!

  2. I have a pretty set routine if I want to level up a pet now. The master trainer NPCs in Draenor are all manageable with a carry pet. You can find lineups for them at WoW Head. Start with Ashlei. She is safe for a level 1 pet, as she has a stuffed elekk that does no damage. Put your fresh level 1 in against the elekk for a round or two, then swap back out and finish it. If you have the Safari hat toy you get a 10% boost to pet xp and your level 1 should jump to level 12. Then on to Vesharr to get to 16 then Taralune to 20. After that you have some options.

I wrote about my leveling routine a while back if you are interested.

    1. Ooh, thank you for the helpful advice and link. I tried one of the Draenor Master Trainers in…Gorgrond I think it was, and found it super hard! But that was some time ago, maybe I should return and check it out again with a more focused head, hehe. Thanks again πŸ™‚

  3. Wildeheart is a treasure! Since he says that Squirt is up on April 8th, do that! You’ll need a Weebination and an Enchanted Broom.
Being spoiler free is great. However, I’d not see the Xu-Fu strategies as a crutch but rather a compendium of knowledge that is well researched. Especially in Mac’ree which, even with a guide, is a heart-breaker.
Being new to pets this expansion, it will be a long run for you; so stick with it! Tasked with leveling pets, maybe it is a good time to combine that with a Alt; call her Petty.

    1. Oh, gotcha! I have the Broom already, I think.

You are right, I should see it that way. I figured, with the Legion Ready Checker, and at least having the pets required, I could get a little help but not handed the solution right away but try my way first.

I agree though…Gosh, those Argus pets. “No, no, no, no!” (Ulduar reference, now you said Heartbreaker :D)

Yeah, I am trying to break it down into smaller bits too. I would just love to set foot on the lands of BfA, and look back and feel “done and ready” for what is next, Battle Pet wise πŸ™‚ With the strongest army I can wish for!

That is a very good idea! Once Critter Week is around again, I should use an alt to level those pets instead of Alunaria. Why waste the good Character XP. Great, thanks a lot πŸ™‚ It might even be fun to make a brand new character and start.

But I guess, the most pet XP comes from Pet Battle fights, where your level pet is far lower level than the pets you are up against?

  4. You got some good advise already so I’ll just add one thing. Do you have Boon of the Zookeeper (http://www.wowhead.com/item=144346/boon-of-the-zookeeper)? It’s an easy way to get Pet Charms and Battle Stones if you’re doing Legion content.
And good luck! πŸ™‚ I started with pet collecting last year and got into serious pet battling this year and it’s not easy. I didn’t even try to do Family Familiar (I’m not sure there’s enough time to finish it until BfA comes) but Family Fighter is much easier because the pets are always up.

    1. Thank you for chiming in, Ann πŸ™‚ Solid idea. For a while I had that Mana enchant thing, to do Withered Training, but the droprate is far lower than the Pet Charm one, so replacing that is in order!

Hm, aw right. One has to wait for the right daily to pop up. Gosh, that is true, it might not even be possible. Oh well, it’s worth a shot! Also, I seem to need that Nightmare Treant for the battles on Argus too, hah πŸ˜€

Right, so on Argus, you can just battle them over and over? Thanks again πŸ™‚

      Liked by 2 people

      1. You can just battle them over and over on Argus but it still takes a lot of time. I don’t have the Nightmare Treant and I did the Argus ones anyway because there are strategies without it. I’m still missing some of frequently used pets but I’ve always found a way around it. For example Cinder Kitten is a store pet and I’m not getting it any time soon. But you can most of the best pets eventually πŸ™‚

  5. I usually go about leveling my pets when there is a “Squirt Day” (or “Super Squirt Day” when the pet battle event is going on) in the garrison – funny name, lol. If I need one stray pet leveled, I will do it outside of the Horde garrison as well as there are plenty of pets right outside that can easily be battled and re-spawn fast.

As for quality, if I can capture a rare version of the pet, I’ll do that. Any others that only come in uncommon or lesser quality I will use a stone on them. I also found the best way to get pet charms are to just do dailies and use Boon of the Zookeeper if you REALLY need them.

I don’t really worry about breeds as I’m more of a collector in the end, so I can’t help with that one.

    1. Hey Velgana – Thank you for stopping by and offering your thoughs πŸ™‚ Hah, yes, I have been wondering a tad about that name too πŸ˜›

Right, you are the same as me, then – I do not care much for breeds either; I collect way more than I battle. But in most cases, I go for speed, speed, speed.

I just heard that the Pet Charms won’t carry into BfA, so all those I have stashed can be put to good use now πŸ™‚

      Thanks again!

  6. Gosh, I would love to be able to help you out, but I can’t :/

I have many pets and I do pet battles from time to time, but the thing is, I’m not serious about it. I love my pets, for achievements and for my chars to have a buddy while levelling, exploring and stuff. Also for the pets quests. I don’t have any idea about which pets are better. I choose they by the way they look and which ones I like more πŸ˜› (of course, I pay attention to those informations about the type of pet and which type is best against a certain one). I had an enchant on my main’s shoulders that gave me many pet charms which I sometimes use to level up or put the rare type. But that’s pretty much it. Those answers you got make perfect sense though πŸ™‚ Good luck and have fun!

    1. Thank you for chipping in anyway πŸ™‚ I’m not too serious about it either, but the completionist in me (darn her) wants to win against all pets on Argus – and for that – it appears – I need to get serious!

  7. A long time ago, when pet battles were introduced, I would have been your source of ideas how to go for this πŸ˜‰ I was addicted pet battler.

Not sure why, but at some point, probably due to my inactivity, I was more interested to level up to be able to make PvP with my friends, and had no time for things like pet battles anymore. There was no time anymore for side-things… because I had to catch up to play with my friends together.

Now sometimes when I’ve been active again, I am totally lost as well and have no clue where I stopped, what I need to continue, where I should continue. You get it.. I lost the leash, literally. πŸ™‚ But I have tons of pets πŸ™‚ I wish I could help you.

    1. Oh, thank you for chipping in anyway, Dennis πŸ™‚

I hear you; pet battles can be very time consuming too, and, gosh, where does one begin, indeed! Wearing blinkers in game helps a lot πŸ˜‰
